Tourism NZ wants to take same-sex couples to the end of the rainbow

To celebrate the passing of New Zealand's marriage equality laws – and no doubt stick the boot into the Australian government – Tourism New Zealand is looking for an Australian same-sex couple to fly across the Tasman to be wed.

Developed by Eleven PR, the competition invites applicants to enter via the Star Observer's Facebook page. Entries close on 10 July. The winning couple will be flown to New Zealand for a ceremony on 19 August, the first day the Marriage Amendment Act comes into effect.

Tourism New Zealand general manager Australia Tim Burgess said: "The recent decision to let same-sex couples marry in New Zealand has created news around the world, so we wanted to give Australians the chance to be part of history and make it possible for one Australian same-sex couple to become the first to marry in New Zealand."

To enter, competitors must upload a photo of themselves to the Star Observer Facebook page and state why they would love to get married in New Zealand. The winners will be judged on the best responses.

The prize includes return flights from Australia, accommodation, a wedding ceremony and reception for up to 20 people. The wedding location will be announced in July alongside the winning couple.

Whybin TBWA is Tourism New Zealand's creative agency, while Mindshare is responsible for media buying.

Last week, the federal House of Representatives failed to pass a proposed bill which would have recognised overseas same-sex marriages in Australia.
