International animal rights organisation PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has launched two hard-hitting campaigns urging consumers to eschew meat and fur.
The first push, which urges consumers to go vegan, claims doing otherwise sees "trillions of fish [...] suffocate” every year. It shows actor Joaquin Phoenix 'drowning' in a bid to get people to relate to the suffering of caught fish.
“It's slow, painful and frightening, and we do it to one trillion fish every year,” notes Phoenix. “Put yourself in their place, try to relate. Go vegan.” The spot came out the organisation's US arm.
The second campaign, from PETA China, aims to shed light on the use of fur and skins in the fashion industry by turning the tables and showing animals wearing human skin. It's a catwalk, literally.
The spot then goes behind the runway to show human meat hooks and caged people. "Take off your fur. Put on your humanity,” runs the tagline.
The 'Runway Reversal' commercial was donated by Ogilvy & Mather Beijing, according to the organisation.
Reknowned for its confrontational advertising, PETA has also produced light-hearted commercials. Last November it unveiled a suggestive play on 'meat and two veg' featuring men with generously proportioned eggplants and bananas in place of their genitals claiming a vegan diet was key to healthy erectile function and sexual stamina.
