EXCLUSIVE: Industry speculation is mounting that Optus will drop MPG from its $70 million-plus media account, with Starcom rumoured to be taking the business.

While an Optus spokesperson said a final decision has not yet been made, it is understood Starcom has emerged as the frontrunner in the two way battle for the Optus media account.

The win would be a much needed reprieve for Starcom, which has recently lost the Holden and Sony Australia accounts.

The Optus media pitch has been underway since mid 2011. It was initially a four-way shootout between incumbent MPG, Starcom, PHD and MEC.

The pitch was culled to a two horse race in September.

MPG won the Optus account in 2003.

Starcom and MPG were not available for comment.

The Optus creative account is currently under review, with incumbent M&C Saatchi competing against Y&R.
