Optus has approached at least four agencies to pitch for its $73 million media account, including MEC, PHD, Starcom and incumbent MPG.
An actual shortlist has not yet been drawn up, as RFPs were only issued last week.
The agencies Optus has approached have been limited by the fact that the brand did not wish to be with any agencies who have Optus competitors as clients. Because Optus has such a diversified portfolio, the amount of agencies it could approach was limited.
Any agency with clients in competing areas like telecommunications, IPTV or internet was not invited to take part. Agencies like ZenithOptimedia, Mindshare, MediaCom and UM were not invited because of their relationships with Foxtel, iiNet, Amaysim and AAPT respectively.
While the mentioned agencies refused to confirm or deny whether they had been invited, more than one source confirmed that this was the case.
AdNews revealed exclusively yesterday that the media account was under review.
