In a major marketing coup, Nissan has made a local brand play by entering the V8 Supercar Championship, to compete alongside Ford and Holden.
The car manufacturer will take part in Australian motorsport's pinnacle event from 2013.
Nissan said the move was a powerful marketing play, which would “add significant momentum to its primary and corporate brand profile in Australia.”
The move was announced today in Melborne by Nissan Australia Managing Director and chief executive Dan Thompson and V8 Supercar chief executive David Malone, among others.
Thompson said: “We are targeting No.1 importer status in Australia and already making progress towards that as one of the country’s fastest growing brands. V8 Supercars will boost that momentum.”
In recent years, the V8 Supercar championship has been a two-way battle between Holden and Ford.
