Facing the Judge & Jury this week is a ridiculously good-looking Uncle Tobys ad.
Opening Address
Uncle Toby’s ‘The Simple Life’ campaign, by Ogilvy Sydney, features an incredibly vain young man spruiking his model-like features. It’s a tongue-in-cheek piece which immediately inspires thoughts like: “Who does this guy think he is?” or “Wow! He does look good with his shirt off!” But it seems very similar to the Glacéau vitaminwater ads by Smart, featuring Johan the self-obsessed metrosexual.
Verdict
The Glacéau ad features a Zoolander-esque, “really, really ridiculously good-looking” type of guy, talking directly into the screen. The Uncle Toby’s ad also stars a bulky narcissist addressing the audience. The similarities are quite obvious, but then again, one could say that both of these ads are similar to the Old Spice viral campaign, also featuring a sexy gent talking to the audience about his bulging…erm…attributes.
Sentence
Ogilvy Sydney must neglect its daily beauty regimen. No more exfoliating cream. Stop the mani-pedis. Ixnay on the laser peels. A rain check on snake venom serums. An end to frosted tips. An embargo on tanning beds. Finally – and we know this is going to be the most difficult – no more chest waxing.
