The coronation of McCann Australia executive creative director John Mescall is complete with his ascension to a global CD role with McCann in New York.
The move comes just days after McCann Melbourne added to its haul of five Grand Prixs at Cannes from last year with another Grand Prix in Creative Effectiveness this year.
McCann has used Cannes as the venue to announce the completion of a global shuffle of its creative talents, with Mescall moving to the US to join recently announced global ECDs James Dawson-Hollis and Bill Wright as part of McCann Worldgroup global creative leadership team.
Mescall's existing role of national creative director of McCann in Australia will be shared by Melbourne ECD Pat Baron and Sydney ECD Dejan Rasic.
Mescall's move confirms speculation a wider role was on the cards after the Australian agency hired Rasic – himself a prolific winner at Cannes – into the Sydney role.
Rob Reilly, global creative chairman, said Mescall had elevated McCann in Australia to the position of one of the most respected creative agencies in the world.
“John’s all talent and no ego and he has helped lead McCann Australia to become one of the best agencies in the world. John now has the opportunity to magnify what he does on a global stage. I am certain that John’s reputation for delivering stellar work will be a magnet for recruiting the best and brightest to McCann.”
The move is another validation of the decision by McCann world group to buy Mescall's agency Smart Creative in 2011, with Smart's CEO, Ben Lilley, taking over the McCann CEO role.
Lilley said the rise of Mescall to a global role was an endorsement of the strategies adopted with the acquisition.
“It's a wonderful endorsement of the world-class creative output our entire Australian operation has been producing over the past two years,” Lilley said.
