Honda has jump-started the Super Bowl ad blitz early with the online release of its mega-ad, a homage to 1980s teen classic Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
The two-minute online video is now on YouTube, while on game day, 5 February, Honda will run a 60-second version to promote its CR-V model.
The ad features Matthew Broderick, who portrayed the titular character over 25 years ago, playing hooky for the day. Like Ferris, Broderick has an adventure around town, going to a museum, a horse race, the carnival and performing in a parade.
The ad, created by US agency RPA, contains over a dozen references to the seminal 80s flick, directed by teen movie icon John Hughes. The Honda ad was directed by Todd Phillips, the man behind The Hangover, is using the hashtag #dayoff to generate conversations on Twitter.
The Super Bowl - championship game of the American NFL - commands the highest ad dollars with a 30-second slot reportedly costing $US3.5 million. The ads played during the game are some of the most talked about of the year, with social media increasingly part of the conversation.
