News Corp Australia has announced the winners of its 2014 Cannes Young Lions competition.

The five winning teams of two which have been selected to represent Australia at the prestigious 2014 International Cannes Lions Festival are:

Digital: Laura Petruccelli and Rohan Cooke from Grey (VIC)

Print: Millicent Malcolm and Zenon Predecki from JWT Melbourne (VIC)

Film: Carl Robertson and Tristan Viney from GPY&R (QLD)

Media: Jason Maggs and John Dawson from Mindshare (NSW)

Marketing: Laura Jenkins (NSW) from Foxtel and Pippa Kulmar from Retail Oasis (NSW)

The runners up in the print and media categories will represent Australia at the 2014 Spikes Asia Festival in Singapore in September. They are:

Print: Cam McMillan and Adam Slater from BWM (VIC)

Media: Nelson Demartini & Hannah MacAuslane from UM (QLD)

News Corp Australia again partnered with the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI). Finalist teams were asked to respond to a 24 hour brief (48 hours for film) that supports MCRI’s campaign encouraging people to take a break from social media for 48 hours and instead refocus on things that are more important. And at the same time, raise funds and awareness for child health research.

Judge in the media category CEO of Mindshare Katie Rigg-Smith said that there was lot of time spent debating the winners this year because the quality of the entrants was so high, “This is my fifth year of judging this and every year I'm blown away by how good the talent is.”

Rigg-Smith explained that over her five years of judging she is noticing a shift in how the entrants who are coming through are approaching the brief in such different ways.

“I'm noticing the media people getting better and better, it also shows how different our industry is with our channels, that the way they think is different and how they bring it to life across paid, owned and earned, which five years ago they weren't talking about.”

At the time of the announcement Rohan Cooke from Grey Melbourne couldn't believe he had won, “when we saw that the finalists had come out, we were thrilled to see that we had made it to the finals.

“To see the competition we we're up against not only the best in Australia but awarded globally, it was fantastic.”

News Corp Australia group director – sales Fiorella Di Santo said: “The level of talent that is unearthed over the course of our Cannes Young Lions competition continues to impress us. The sheer determination, immense creativity and inspired innovation demonstrated by our finalists this year was remarkable. Congratulations to all the winners, but also to everyone who entered the competition – it was a very tough pool.”

Now in its sixth program year, the Australia Young Lions program launched by News Corp Australia was awarded the most successful in the world in last year at the official Cannes Festival Representatives meeting in London.

Winning teams receive return flights to Nice in France, accommodation and a Young Lions registration to the Cannes Festival with access to all the seminars, awards ceremonies, showcases and the Young Lions party.

The 2014 International Cannes Lions Festival is being held on 15-21 June 2013.
