Google has appointed Procter & Gamble's Australia MD Maile Carnegie as the new country director for Google ANZ, drawing to a close weeks of speculation on who would replace former local boss Nick Leeder, who left to head up Google France.

Carnegie, a highly regarded marketer, will now be trusted to blend strategic vision with political sure-footedness and top brand management.

After 20 years with P&G, most recently as managing director for Australia and New Zealand, following roles in Singapore and the US, industry believes she is well placed to lead from the front. Carnegie is widely regarded as one of the best marketers in the business and hails from a firm renowned for its marketing focus.

It's a coup for Google, said Leigh Terry, head of Omnicom Media Group. "It's a clear statement of intent that Google is delivering for advertisers. People who know her well say she is razor sharp smart. She has clearly done the hard yards at P&G locally and internationally."

As well as grow the company's more traditional businesses, one of Carnegie's aims will be to put online video on a par with TV on screen schedules. Coming from the firm that has put Old Spice in front of over 100 million Youtube viewers, she should be well placed to achieve that goal.
