Girlfriend Magazine makes social push

Pacific Magazines owned Girlfriend Magazine has relaunched with a bigger push towards social media.

The new look magazine heavily utilises the Netpage app that the magazine has been using since October last year, as well as calling on readers to interact with the magazine by using hashtags that could see their photos gracing the pages of the magazine.

Editor of the mag Sarah Tarca told AdNews, “Because of apps like Instagram everyone is an art director now or a photographer and we wanted to reflect our readers' creativity back in the magazine,” she said.

“With the new redesign we wanted to give our readers even more of an opportunity through social media to show us what they want and interact with the magazine.”

Girlfriend Magazine has a combined following of just below 200,000 on social sites Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Most of our readers would rather DM (direct message) us on Facebook and Instagram than send us an e-mail,” she said.

Because of this Tarca explained it would be silly not to listen to her audience and not embrace social media as much as they have.

“Five or six years ago no one really knew the impact social media could have, everyone is starting to listen now,” She said.

"For us though, when all the other magazines were jumping on Facebook – our readers were already saying, Facebook - what's next? So we have to work with the latest and newest thing because that's what our audience want."
