Cloud-based services, apps overload, Facebook's IPO, digital facial recognition, iTV and tap and pay technology are just some of the things to watch in 2012, according to JWT.

The global ad agency network compiled a list of 100 things to watch in 2012, forecasting media, cultural and consumer trends.

Among the list is the proliferation of cloud-based services to allow consumers access everywhere to their media, but security will become an increasing concern. Apps will hit overload mode and may wear off as the novelty factor wears off, however apps designed for older demographics will grow.

Facebook's imminent initial public offering is one to watch for the mediaratti and is expected to net the company and its upper echelon up to $US100 million. Facial recognition technology (such as Samsung Galaxy Nexus phone's facial unlock) will gain popularity but will raise privacy and civil liberty alarms for some.

Tap and pay technology (such as Google Wallet) will see its manufacturers and brands offer better incentives for a higher adoption rate among consumers and retailers.

Internet-enabled cars, iTV, interactive screens, smarter check-ins, social integration in ticket purchases, split personality smartphones, TV commerce and voice control are just some the other technological innovations to watch this year.

New York-based JWT director of trendspotting, Ann Mack, said: "Many of the items on our list reflect broader economic, environmental, technological and social developments we've been tracking, while others have potential to ladder up to bigger trends."
