Seven West Media has appointed a big data guru to take the lead on its push into multi-platform broadcasting and HbbTV.

David Miller, who has been leading the big data strategy at Vodafone Hutchison Australia, is joining Seven in the coming weeks and is charged with consolidating the company's current subscription and online behaviour data.

To help him in his role as general manager of business intelligence, Seven is partnering with data company Acxiom to build data analytic capabilities to help Seven deliver new content for audiences and targeted advertising for clients.

Miller's appointment comes ahead of the launch of Freeview Plus, which is due to kick off before mid-2014 and will bring HbbTV (Hybrid Broadcast Broadband TV), bringing broadcast and internet television together, to Australia for the first time.'

Kurt Burnette, chief revenue officer at Seven West Media, told AdNews: “We have been working on the build phase of our data analytics capabilities for over a year now. We are calling on David's expertise to ensure that build goes the way it should and that the extraction of the data is as we need it. It's a whole business proposition and it's a skill set we need.”

Burnette said Miller will also be tasked with bringing together the data teams that already exist across Seven West Media's businesses. “David's appointment is part of change management and bringing all of that information together in one place and consolidating it,” he said. “It's a big job.”

Miller, who worked at O2 and British Gas in the UK before VHA, said: “The future of the media industry will be shaped by the companies that successfully transform their businesses through the innovative use of their data assets.”
