Contrary to what Aqua sung in 1997, life in plastic, is in fact, not fantastic.
Following the single-use plastic bag ban experienced throughout Australian grocery stores in July, plastic straws are now set to follow suit and be kicked to the curb.
This is where the #SydneyDoesn'tSuck campaign comes into play. Driven by Jess Miller, the City of Sydney deputy lord mayor and deputy chair of environmental committee, the campaign, in collaboration with creative ad agency Paper Moose, sets out to combat unnecessary plastic straw use.
With the help of a simple seal costume and some judging eyes, the 40 second online video playfully shines light on where most straws are distributed- the bar.
Nick Hunter, creative director at Paper Moose, ultimately wanted to show how unacceptable it is to use single-use plastic straws when you order a drink, and encourage people and bar owners to think again about asking for them.
Along with McDonalds and Starbucks acknowledging their role in this issue, recently announcing their phasing out of plastic straws over the next 2 years, this campaign allows Sydney venues to proudly do their part too.
They can sign up and declare their commitment to being seal approved and not sucking at laststraw.com.au, and can be recognised through use of the hashtag #SydneyDoesn'tSuck.
