Just when we thought the “Should’ve gone to Specsavers” line was wearing thin, the global retailer brings in the big guns.
John Cleese has brought back his iconic Basil Fawlty character to recreate a scene from the comedy show Fawlty Towers.
In the ad, by Specsavers in-house creative agency, Cleese attacks a police car with a tree branch which is a throwback to the 1975 episode where he gives his own car a “damn good thrashing.”
Cleese worked closely with the creative team on script development, and said in a behind-the-scenes clip that he has rejected a lot of Fawlty Towers scripts, but he took on this commercial as he thought it was genuinely funny.
Props to Specsavers; 35 years later and Basil Fawlty is still as hilarious as ever.
