Seven eyes fantasy betting company
Seven West Media is in discussion with CrownBet and Fox Sports about buying an equity share in fantasy betting company Draftstars according to The Australian.
It is thought the parties are hoping a deal will be struck prior to the start of the AFL's finals series.
Draftstars sees participants pay an entry fee to assemble a team of players to form their own fantasy team. The winner receives a payout from a contest prize pool.
Foxtel plots streaming services
Also in The Australian, Foxtel is thought to be planning the launch of a lower-priced package for Foxtel Play to make it more competitive against rivals in the subscription video on demand (SVOD) space.
It is also being reported that Foxtel CEO Peter Tonagh will launch the new service at the Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) conference tomorrow.
Government rules out extending reach of anti-siphoning
The government has ruled out extending the reach of the anti-siphoning laws to digital broadcasters despite calls from the opposition and from Foxtel to look at reforms.
As reported in the Australian Financial Review (AFR), Foxtel has pointed to the fact that only traditional pay TV providers cannot acquire rights to sporting events and that digital players are excluded from the same restrictions.
At the end of last year Optus picked up the rights to English Premier League matches.
Pay TV spends $893m on local production
Also in The AFR, the pay TV industry has spent $893 million in producing local content in 2015-2016 according to data from ASTRA.
The figure is a 12.2% boost from the previous year, with CEO Andrew Maiden predicting it will top $1 billion if media reforms are passed.
