Telstra strikes first football deal

Telstra has signed a deal with Football Federation Australia, the first the telco has inked with the FFA following the separation of the football organisation with major sponsor Optus earlier this year.

The partnership is for Telstra's 'Thanks' loyalty program which will see the telco offer existing customers ticket upgrades and access to pre-sales to select A-League matches. It will also give customers a chance to win a “money can't buy experience”.

The FFA deal is a further expansion of Telstra's 'Thanks' program, which also includes discounted movie tickets, concert tickets and other sporting events.

“With the World Cup approaching next year, many of our customers have told us that they are excited about this sport,” Telstra chief marketing officer Mark Buckman said.

The move signalled a shift in Telstra's relationship with the FFA, which had previously been hampered by the FFA's close ties to rival Optus. Optus and the FFA parted ways in June after  a five-year major investment which included the management of the organisation's digital platforms.

Telstra had previously been touted has a potential partner to replace Optus.
