Internet Explorer dials up the 90s nostalgia

1990s icon, the friendly troll. Microsoft is banking on Gen Y-ers' nostalgia in its new ad for Internet Explorer

Slap bands, tamagochis and super-soakers. Microsoft has aimed its new ad straight at Gen Y-ers with a trip down the 1990s memory lane.

Remember a time when trolls were your friends? Not the vicious haters on the internet but the vertically haired figures that permeated everyone's homes. Well, so does Microsoft's Internet Explorer.

The tech company is trying to reclaim its glory days by reminding Gen Y-ers of the years when walkmans, pogs (Australians: think Tazos), yoyos and undercuts ruled the pop cultural milieu.

The brand has been on a mission to re-enter the hearts of consumers by repositioning itself as more cheeky and fun than the straight-laced corporate dinosaur image it's been plagued by. Maybe a step in the right direction?
