Group buying sites now offer car sales

Group buying sites have entered the automotive category for the first time, with two sites offering discounts on car purchases.

Robbie Rankin and Quy Dao have set up rivalling business, Car Joy and 123cars, respectively, which enable consumers to buy cars with a coupon and they believe this will transform car sales.

Co-founder of Car Joy, Rankin said last month’s deal was for a Mazda3, which needed 10 people to sign up to qualify for the $19,990 deal, almost $5000 below the retail price. Two weeks later, a Holden was for sale at a $3000 discount.

But the jury is still out on this new group buying venture’s long term success, according to Telsyte research manager Sam Yip, who said group buying was impulsive shopping, and not compatible with car sales.
