Young Guns: Pip Dolman at DDB Melbourne

In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's DDB Melbourne (Smith St) art director Pip Dolman.

Time at the company:

***Consults LinkedIn*** coming up to one year!

How long have you been in the industry?

Two years and eight months (or 973ish days in newborn terms).

How did you get here? Was this always the plan?

As a Canberra-born lass I had two options; a) work for the government as a public servant or b) move to Melbourne, and live a buck wild life surrounded by fantastic people that inspire the wacky and wonderful ideas that I now get paid to think of.

(Spoiler) I’m so grateful that baby Pip made the scary choice and enrolled in the ‘not-quite-right-fit’ uni course, then the dream uni course, then award school and the multiple internships so that I get to live, laugh and love option B every damn day.

Who is your right-hand person who guides you day to day?

Figuratively and literally, as his desk is to my physical right, it’s Gid Goldberg. You’ll probably never meet someone with more tenacity, dry wit, smarts, empathy and god dam talent.

As his creative partner, I have the pleasure of working with him every single day (poor chap) and I can attest that he’s a bloody brilliant creative and an even better mate.

What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?

Supposedly, curiosity kills an alarming number of cats. Thankfully, I work in an industry that commends curiosity, so I was compelled to learn that the original phrases resolve was ‘…but satisfaction brought it back’.

Maybe it’s just the cat fanatic in me but I believe having permission to get lost in tangents of research is truly the most satisfying work perk.

And the biggest challenge?

‘Apparently’ it’s still not socially acceptable to bring cats into the office.

Where do you turn for inspiration?

My peers. They’re a hell of a lot cooler than me.

My favourite advert is:

In fear of sounding like a suck-up (bosses work), Matilda Bay’s Rejected Ales. It’s everything that gives me ad fomo; craft, a killer story, craft, copy that makes you chuckle and did I mention craft!?

Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?

No thanks, I’m trying to rebrand from infamous yapper to mysterious and esteemed employee!

Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?

Anna Wintour. Watcha ya back babe. I’m one fierce haircut away from your job x

In five years time, I'll be:

Itchy feet got me here and I fear my left foot is tingling towards sunny winters, a plethora of Pastel de Nata’s and afternoon surfs. On the other hand (foot?), my right is rigidly in love with my Melbourne life and the team at DDB. Hopefully, in five years I’ll reach a nice page break in my laundry list of professional goals. Otherwise, I guess I’ll have to achieve a level of flexibility that enables me to do cross-continental splits?
