In this series, AdNews spotlights young talent in the Australian media, marketing and advertising sector. This time it's Carat digital executive Angus Jones.
Time in current role/time at the company:
I’ve been a Digital Executive for close to 2 years.
How long have you been in the industry?
Will be 3 years in March!
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
With a giant university HECS debt from all my media and communications studies at RMIT, my drum teaching and freelance production careers weren’t going to be enough… I needed to get into media proper! How? Well, I knew a friend, of a friend who was looking for someone to fill a graduate media agency role. Applied. Was interviewed and lucky enough landed my first media agency role at Carat. When I first started, I was a client associate across a number of clients from Twinings, OurWatch, Beacon Lighting and Reece for one year, after which I had moved across to the Medibank team as a digital executive and have been there for close to 2 years.
Who is your right hand person/who guides you day to day?
The nature of this client is that no two days are the same. I greatly admire several people within the team, but if I had to pick two it would be Sushma Kollu and Nisha Rajamani. Both are amazing leaders and role models that support me on a number of different levels.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
Easy. The team I work with.
And the biggest challenge?
Consistently wanting to grow and develop professionally given the industry is consistently evolving and changing. Also, I think the daily agency life struggle is not something to skim over too! #agencylife
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
This is a difficult one to answer as I don’t particularly have my sights set on one person’s job. I see myself continuing to assist in the growth and innovation and being part of senior leadership in the years to come.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Honestly, different forms of media. Social media, film & television, podcasts, the list list goes on. Potentially a bit cheesy but, I turn to the people I surround myself with. I feel very lucky to have a close family and a close group of friends who continue to support me and give me inspiration when I need it.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I have no secrets to share! I’m a very open book and everyone within my team is fully up to date with my life!
Where do you see yourself in five years time?
I’ll be returning from an international trip (preferable Italy or Greece) where my team/agency I work with has won EVERY possible digital media award. No seriously, that’s what’s going to happen… More realistically, I’d love to be leading a digital marketing team as its Digital Lead/Director.
