Alex Kidd, senior designer at BMF
Time in current role/time at the company:
Senior Designer at BMF, where I’ve been for the past 2.5 years
How long have you been in the industry?
Quick maths. 8 years or so.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan?
I don’t think I ever really have a plan, some would say I am slightly disorganised. Coming straight out of uni in Auckland I got a scholarship to the big ol’ apple to be a design intern at Saatchi & Saatchi. A year on and my visa was up, I made the journey back home to New Zealand. The three buildings in Auckland didn’t feel big enough after NYC. So I skipped over to Sydney. 6 years on and here we are.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day?
Sir Lincoln Grice. The boss of my dreams. My inspiration. The person who I want to be when I grow up. And Fi. The most beautiful soul in advertising. She is beauty and grace. They’re my mum and dad in design.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in?
Cheese, but the people. They’re a fun and talented bunch.
And the biggest challenge?
Not eating all the snacks.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future?
Not so much a role, but, if I’m half the designer/boss/person Lincoln Grice is then I’d be happy.
Where do you turn for inspiration?
Just doing life things. Going for a walk, or a coffee, or a camping trip, or a doom scroll, or a sleep. The more I do, the more I learn and the more I become inspired to do more and learn more.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you?
I had a pet goat called Irene as a kid.
In 5 years time I’ll be…
As long as I’m making things look nice, with nice people, and I’m being nice then that’ll be really nice.
