Our Young Gun profile takes a look at some of the young talent across the advertising, adtech, marketing and media sector in Australia. It aims to shed light on the varying roles, people and companies across the buzzing industry.
Today we speak to Arabella Magno, Client & Communications Associate Manager, Wavemaker
Time in current role/time at the company: Five months in my current role, just over 2 years at Wavemaker.
How long have you been in the industry? Just over 2 years.
How did you get here? Was this always the plan? Uni sparked my interest in marketing. While I was studying, I was lucky enough to do a media internship where I saw endless opportunities. When I graduated, I joined Wavemaker as a GroupM MGrad and never looked back.
Who is your right-hand person/who guides you day to day? I’m honestly very spoiled at Wavemaker when it comes to mentors, there is so much talent here! But if I had to choose one person, it would be Laura Brady, my Group Client Director. She has been guiding me since day one and everything I’ve learned is because of her. The friendship and banter are an added bonus.
What’s the best thing about the industry you work in? There’s a beauty in this industry that I think tends to get overlooked during the hustle of the workday. We’re able to tell stories, influence behaviours and shape perceptions through advertising. Whether it’s about creating connections over a brand’s new sustainable practice or taking over social media with the hottest movie release, we can look back on it and say we had a part in that.
And the biggest challenge? We always try to stay at the forefront of the newest market update, but before you know it there’s another trend, platform or tool to learn. On top of that, figuring out new ways to be innovative and creative when the landscape is ever-changing keeps us on our toes.
Whose job have you set your sights on in the future? All industries are currently adapting and growing with the shift the pandemic brought and so there’s a huge possibility my future job is one that hasn’t been created yet. But being part of an awesome senior management team doesn’t sound too bad.
Where do you turn for inspiration? The people I am lucky to surround myself with. From my colleagues to my family, my friends and my partner. I love hearing their own unique perspectives on everything, from pop culture and music, to sports, gaming and more. They always tend to have opinions that I would not have come up with.
My favourite advert is: Nike, You Can’t Stop Sport (Us)
I’m a sucker for ads that tug on the heartstrings a little bit and this one got me. The message is powerful enough, but the editing elevates it so much more.
Tell us one thing people at work don’t know about you? I have this odd fear of bridges. Specifically, when I have to walk on a bridge and there are cars driving underneath. (But I still want to do the Harbour Bridge climb one day…)
In five years' time I'll be: Returning back from another international holiday to my home, on a piece of land that I own (If I’m lucky enough!).
