Twitter is launching a new product to make it easier for users to connect with each other over specific interests.
Communities, which is already in testing, is similar to online platforms such as Facebook Group and Reddit where users can join groups and discuss relevant topics.
When users join a Community they can tweet directly to the group, rather than to all their followers on Twitter. Only members in the Community can reply and join the conversation.
“While you can Tweet only to your Community for a focused conversation, Community pages and timelines are publicly available so anyone can read, Quote Tweet, and report Community Tweets,” Twitter says.
“We want to continue to support public conversation and help people find Communities that match their interests, while also creating a more intimate space for conversation.”
In Communities, moderators pick the focus, create the Community rules, and invite people to join.
Twitter has begun testing Communities around popular conversations across its platform, including dogs, weather, sneakers, astrology, and skincare.
Currently, users have to be invited to join a Community by a moderator or another member of the group.
