Total TV advertising revenue surged 12% to $3.85 billion in the financial year to June, according to ThinkTV.

The figure, compared to the previous financial year, includes metropolitan free-to-air, regional free-to-air, subscription TV, and BVOD (excluding SBS).

Metropolitan free-to-air advertising revenue, shrugged off the initial dip from the pandemic in 2020, and ended the year 11.5% higher at $2.6 billion.

BVOD ad revenue accelerated by 63% to $278 million.

“Australians have turned to TV through all the twists and turns of this horrible health crisis; whether to watch trusted, timely news or, when it all gets a bit overwhelming, for light relief, entertainment or to cheer on their favourite sports teams,” says ThinkTV CEO Kim Portrate.

“The resulting increase in viewing is reflected in the growth of Total TV revenues for both the half and the full year.

“BVOD continues its impressive run as Australia’s fastest-growing media channel with a growth rate exceeding all expectations and the same period last year when BVOD shot up 32%.”

The ThinkTV numbers confirm the rise of television. The SMI (Standard Media Index) for the first six months of the year shows TV media agency bookings also up 25% and just $44 million below pre-pandemic numbers in 2019.

The acceleration in television ad revenue can also be seen in the ThinkTV numbers for the six months to June.

In the half year, TV advertising revenue increased 27.2% to $1.9 billion compared to the same six months in 2020.

The total revenue for the metropolitan free-to-air networks was up 25.8% to $1.3 billion for the six months.
