TikTok has extended its maximum video length to three minutes from 60 seconds.
The social media platform has been testing the longer video length with creators around the world, including chris.kova and Road tripping this long weekend? Take a break every 2 hours!#AAMIRestTowns #ad
Now, the company says the feature will be available to all users over the coming weeks.
“Creators are already well-versed in weaving multi-part stories together on TikTok (we all know the phrase, "like and follow for part 3”) but we often hear from creators that they'd love just a little more time to bring their cooking demos, elaborate beauty tutorials, educational lesson plans, and comedic sketches to life with TikTok’s creative tools,” says TikTok product manager Drew Kirchhoff.
“With longer videos, creators will have the canvas to create new or expanded types of content on TikTok, with the flexibility of a bit more space.”
The update from TikTok comes as Instagram outlines its plans around video for the future, with head of Instagram Adam Mosseri saying in a social media update today in the US that Instagram is no longer a “photo-sharing” app.
Mosseri says that the platform is focusing on four areas; creators, videos, shopping, and messaging. As part of its focus on video, Instagram will start to experiment with recommendations and new formats of video.
“Let’s be honest, there’s some really serious competition right now - TikTok is huge, YouTube is even bigger, and there’s lots of other upstarts as well,” Mosseri says.
“So people are looking to Instagram to be entertained, there’s stiff competition. There's more to do and we have to embrace that. And that means change.”
