AdNews last year launched the WFH Diaries during the depths of the fallout from the pandemic, a way of sharing how people managed their days.

This time, with lockdown running again, we're asking for a run down on how everyone likes to start their day working from home. Some dress to impress, others slip on the t-shirt. And everyone has their own way to carve the day into manageable chunks.

Joseph Pardillo, managing director, Ryvalmedia Melbourne:

How do you start your day? Dressed in? Shoes?

An audible gasp moment I know, but a solid phone scroll before a hot tea and the alternative cinnamon scroll is my typical start to the day which normally happens as soon as my body alarm clock wakes me up at around 6.30am. Whilst not high on any wellness advice website, I feel that if I allow myself that scrolling, liking, sharing, re-posting and story-ing time first up then I can get on with focusing on smashing out a quick run, taking the dogs for a quick poop walk around the block (to cool down from the run), freshening up and making that hot cuppa – all at auto-pilot pace and ultimately with zero temptation of picking up my phone throughout to slow me down. So by the time I open up the laptop to say g’day to the world, my feng shui is all calm, cool and collected… and yet again the selection of leather shoes, suit pants and formal attire is substituted with loose fitting cotton Zoom-wear and uggies which from observation has become the universal standard during WHF I must say.

Tips for getting through the day?

A big wholesome brekky so that I don’t spend 9am to 1pm thinking about when I can stop and snack on some sugary pick me ups, a long-lasting Spotify playlist shuffle that contains a spread of old school RnB tunes, and at least a couple of rounds of matcha-latte mugs in between – which is the most essential part. I once read that monks and samurai warriors have enjoyed matcha for centuries to help keep them mentally focused, and to give them a long-lasting energy boost during long periods of work and meditation so that’s good enough reason for me (aside from my addiction to it).

Distractions?

The courier wearing the bright orange vest, which is the trigger for our covid-bought Labradoodle puppy barking like crazy just when it’s my turn to unmute myself on that very important client Zoom call. The saving grace being when it’s a Zoom call with our client MyDeal.com.au, as clearly that’s the reason for the courier person in the first place right?!

Upside. Downside.

Whilst the aforementioned distraction is the downside, I must say that online shopping (within the micro gaps during the day) and not having to rush pre/post work hours through busy malls is the upside that goes along with it. However what goes up must go down, so beware the courier with the bright orange vest!
