The airwaves in Australia switched entirely to coverage of the death of Elizabeth II.

All television stations had intense coverage day and night of what was probably one of the most anticipated and planned for events, the death of the Queen.

Michael Rowland, before he left for London to anchor ABC coverage, on Twitter: "Rest In Peace."

And later: "Thanks to everyone who trusted @BreakfastNews for coverage of this momentous story."

Presenters wore black, normal programming was suspended, websites blogged with updates as they happened.

And editorials wondered what this all meant.

The Sydney Morning Herald: God Save the King! What does Charles III mean for an Australian republic?

The Australian: King Charles III steps up to destiny of service and duty

The West Australian: Let us be united as we grieve the Queen
