D&AD has revealed the winners for entries across the Impact, Side Hustle, Next and Craft categories, in the first round of Pencils for the 2020 D&AD Awards.

The news follows the organisation’s recent announcement to continue the annual awards program online despite disruptions caused by the global coronavirus outbreak.

Australian production company Finch has won a Wood Pencil in the Impact category for The Lion's Share Fund, a wildlife conservation and animal welfare initiative which sees major advertisers contribute 0.5% of their media buy for each campaign featuring an animal.

Since launching in 2018, the initiative has been backed by the United Nations, David Attenborough and Mars and signed up 50 brands including Gucci and the NRMA.

M&C Saatchi Sydney has also won at D&AD, taking home a Graphite Pencil in the Craft category for its use of sound design and music in the Tourism Australia campaign, Matesong featuring Kylie Minogue.

The campaign, which was later pulled off air due to the bushfire crisis happening in Australia over summer, launched before the Queen's annual Christmas speech and was designed to attract Brits down under.

Despite not getting its full run, the campaign still received 182 million digital impressions, 46 million online views, $40 million in earned media and made Australia the number one searched holiday destination globally.

“Judging by the first round of Pencil winners, it is clear that it has been another outstanding year for global creativity," D&AD chairman Tim Lindsay says.

"At a time when the world is in crisis, it feels poignant to begin with a broad spectrum of categories and celebrate the craft, impact and potential our creative community has to offer. It is hugely encouraging to see the progressive and vibrant direction that our industry is heading towards, and D&AD are excited to announce further Pencil winners across the coming weeks.”

Further Pencil winners announcements are scheduled for June 16, July 16, September 8 and September 10.
