Singapore will become the first country in the world to ban advertising drinks high in sugar as a way to combat diabetes.

The country, which is now seeking industry feedback before taking action next year, says the prohibition of advertisements will cover broadcast, print, out-of-home and online channels.

The ban will cover "least healthy" soft drinks, juices, yogurt drinks and instant coffee.

The Ministry of Health will also introduce mandatory front-of-pack nutrition labels for less healthy pre-packaged sugar sweetened beverages.

Singaporeans consume on average 60 grams, or twelve teaspoons, of sugar daily. More than half of this comes from sugar-sweetened drinks.

Out of a population of 4.41 million, Singapore has 606,000 cases of diabetes.
