Optus Sport has partnered with subscription-based sports news site The Athletic to expand its coverage of football in Australia.

As part of the deal, Optus Sport will feature select articles and videos from The Athletic for free for the next 12 months. The content will appear on a new dedicated News and Articles section on Optus Sport which will provide daily videos, highlights, news and analysis.

Optus Sport customers will also be offered a free six-month subscription to The Athletic.

“The partnership with The Athletic will take Optus Sport’s football coverage to a whole new level of breaking news, exclusive stories and expert analysis, and shows why we are the home of the best football coverage in Australia,” says Optus head of TV and content Corin Dimopoulos.

“While we will be providing football content from The Athletic on Optus Sport longer term, our customers also have the opportunity to access a free six-month subscription to The Athletic.”

The Athletic has more than 450 full-time writers, editors and producers in its global team. Founded in 2016 by Alex Mather and Adam Hansmann, the service is available for $6.99 per month.

Optus Sport recently acquired the Australian media rights for the South American CONMEBOL Copa America 2020 football tournament, as well as the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

“Optus is the ideal partner as we take this significant step in bringing The Athletic’s content to more fans around the world,” says The Athletic APAC commercial director Alex Peebles.

“Optus is a highly innovative media business, the market leader in Australian football and the official Premier League broadcaster and we are extremely pleased that together, we can deliver The Athletic’s incredible product to Australia’s football fans.”
