More than $9 billion was spent on main media advertising in 2019, according to Nielsen Ad Intel spend estimates.
Nielsen has calculated the 20 biggest spending advertisers of 2019 with retailer Harvey Norman topping the list at $165.4 million.
Second is supermarket Woolworths $117.6 million. Competitor Coles, which separated from Wesfarmers, appears on the list in its own right.
Billionaire and would-be MP Clive Palmer, on the strength of his federal election spending, made a debut as a top 20 advertiser in Australia. He comes in ahead of My Chemist, Amazon and Volkswagen.
