News Corp Australia is cutting up to 25 positions from its newsrooms in its latest round of redundancies.
Ten roles go from The Australian, including six from NSW and four from Victoria, according to reports in the Sydney Morning Herald.
Another two roles will go from the Daily Telegraph in Sydney and the company’s news network will lose three positions.
Regional and community divisions will lose another 10 roles, including in Geelong, regional Queensland, Hobart, northern NSW, and South Australia.
News Corp has declined to comment on the cuts.
Last week News Corp chief executive Robert Thomson said the 2021 financial year was “the most profitable year since we created the new News Corp in 2013”, reporting a 30% lift in revenue to $US2.49 billion.
Adam Portelli, media director at journalists' union the MEAA, said the cuts are particularly galling considering the company’s profit announcement.
“News is also set to reap millions of dollars from deals with Facebook and Google under the News Media Bargaining Code which must be invested into journalism," he says. "News must reconsider any proposed cuts.”
The latest round of redundancies comes after significant job losses last year when the company began a restructure to focus on digital. In May 2020, hundreds of jobs were reportedly cut as many community and regional newspapers switched to digital-only and others closed.
