McDonald's tests the free market (for charity)

The going rate for the special sauce at McDonald's is $46.20 per millilitre, if the free market is any guide.

McDonald's kicked off an online auction of its secret sauce online, putting up a 500ml bottle of the stuff for bid on eBay.

One of only 200 such bottles to be manufactured and sold around the world, Aussie punters have responded by going suitably nuts.

The bidding price for the bottle has reached $23,100 at the time of writing, or an average of $46.20 per millilitre.

McDonald's is also selling 25ml of the stuff at its stores for 50c each, meaning conceivably the mystery bidder putting up $23,100 for the 500ml bottle could snap up 1155 litres of the stuff for the same price.

However, McDonald's is restricting sale to 600 tubs per store.

That hasn't stopped savvy entrepreneurs putting a circa 1400% mark-up on tubs they got from the stores.

Meanwhile, a special MacSpecial Sauce vending machine will tour Australia in February, giving punters the chance to tweet in exchange for a sachet of the special stuff.

Luckily, the whole campaign is being run to benefit McDonald's charity, Ronald McDonald House.

If you're so inclined, the auction is running until 9pm next Wednesday.
