Hungry Talks - Psychology and Strategy

This week's episode of RMIT’s Hungry Talks looked at the role of strategic thinking and consumer insights in the success of long-term and strong creative advertising campaigns.  

The series will be going live from 7:30pm for the rest of the season, with the show now launching as a Late Night Special’. 

This episode looked to the creatives who have been successful in creative competitions, like D&AD New Bloods; as well as VMLY&R for its insights on how creativity, insight and strategy is a key part of building “connected brands”.  

Maddie Fricker, integrated producer, Charlie Kuster, senior account manager, and Meesha Laboo, account executive, from VMLY&R joined the studio on Wednesday night. 

Interviews with David Fanner, behavioural science analyst from Ogilvy, as well as Sarannie Tong, Shaun Topp, Corrine Teng and Raz Adams, D&AD New Blood Graphite Pencil Winners, were also featured on the show. 

VMLY&R set this week’s quick brief with the reward of six one-on-one mentor sessions with six different areas of its agency – creative, studio, client engagement, production, project management and editor. 

The winner of the Quick Briefs will also be awarded Scamp Champ at this year’s Pitch Night on Tuesday, October 17. 

Second year students David Chong and Joe Whybin joined the couch for the live student panel.

Next week, Hungry Talks will be delving into ‘Sustainability and Ethics’ in the world of advertising.  

The series will be looking at the agencies and individuals who are making a conscious and positive difference in the industry from a sustainable and ethical point of view, such as through workplace culture and practices, or the selection of clients they represent 

Joining the studio will by Jess Lilley and Amy Hollier, co-founders of The Open Arms; Rudy Jean Rigg, Rainbow History Class and Transathletica content creator; and Val Meijia and Amber McLindin from the 2023 Pitch Night team to discuss the event.  

Executive producer and founder of Poppet Content - and founding Aunty - Nat Taylor, alongside Poppet Content producer, Beth Malcher, will be interviewed to discuss how companies can support sustainability in the fast-paced industry of production and advertising.  

Episode 7 will also involve a discussion around the advertising industry's social and environmental responsibility including greenwashing with Law professor Christine Parker.
