Nine podcast reporter Peter Wells has partnered with Acast to launch a new podcast series on the art of podcasts.
Meta will be hosted and distributed by the streaming platform, which has recently been expanding its local team since its split from Nova Entertainment.
The series will feature people behind some of Australia’s most popular podcasts, including former prime minister Julia Gillard, ABC’s Dr Norman Swan and Rachael Brown from the Walkley Award-winning series Trace.
Wells has been documenting the rise of podcasting in Australia since 2015 as Nine’s dedicated podcast reporter. He also launched his own podcast series Mactalk in 2007.
“Whether listeners are new to podcasting or on the hunt for the next binge-worthy series, Meta allows me to share the fantastic behind the scenes stories that I just can’t fit into 600 words of print,” Wells says.
“Each week I’ve had the opportunity to chat to amazing guests and meet some of my podcasting idols. My favourite interviews have been with independent podcasters. They often contact me about the impact the column has had on growing their audience or even how their mum bought the paper and framed the story.
“Podcasting has handed power back to both the creator and consumer, so that be you a news junky or true crime obsessive there is a podcast for you.”
Podcast listenership has been growing in Australia, even during pandemic lockdowns earlier this year. According to the August Podcast Ranker, 43.6 million podcasts were downloaded from the participating publishers alone.
Australia’s podcasting revenue growth is set to outpace the 30% increase predicated globally to reach $47 million this year.
