Drops from key Channel Seven shows Home and Away and Beauty and the Geek week-on-week allowed Nine to take the lead on a pretty quiet night, but a low-carb offering from science show Catalyst had people tuning in.

With the top five shows all taken by news and current affairs programs, the top-rating non-news show was Kings Cross ER, which pulled in 761,000 viewers.

However coming in just behind was ABC's specialty science program Catalyst, which aired a special on whether low-carb diets had any basis in scientific fact. The topical program bought in 726,000 viewers, while Home and Away dropped.

The soap fell from 853,000 this time last week to 711,000 last night, as Beauty and the Geek also dropped after a spike last week.

The geeks proved popular last week after taking a week off, pulling in 753,000, but it couldn't repeat the trick two weeks in a row with last night's show rating at 531,000.

Meanwhile for Ten, Madam Secretary did well in its timeslot, beating out Big Brother and Family Feud continued to pull in 500,000-plus viewers.

Despite the strong showing from the ABC, Ten managed to beat it out with a share of 20% to the ABC's 19.1%.

Nine won the night with a 28.3% share while Seven took second place with a 26.4% rating.
