Commercial news outlets will get a free kick from the ABC after the public broadcaster launched a service providing links to stories on commercial sites from it's own pages.
ABC CEO Mark Scott revealed the service today saying it had been inspired by a similar successful version launched by the BBC called Newstracker.
The service is expected to have particular relevance to regional publishers.
Scott said the service was part of the ABC's commitment to offering the best possible service from its news websites.
“We are happy to bring audiences in and help them find the information they need, even if that means directing them to another site,” Scott said.
“If our service is valuable, we know they will come back.”
ABC director of news director Kate Torney echoed Scott's sentiments, saying that the ability to provide links to commercial versions of news stories would be a benefit for “the entire media industry”.
