The ABC is extending its tablet reach with the launch of an Android version of its flagship ABC app, which is available for the first time on Android tablets in addition to Android phone, iPhones and iPads.

Earlier this month the ABC added an Android tablet version of its interactive magazine format The Brief and will follow it with a Window app version next month. The digital magazine translates ABC content from TV, online and radio into a multimedia experience developed for tablet.

Angela Clark, the ABC’s director of innovation, said: “We’ve been focusing on improving our mobile experiences and exploring new territory with innovative content experiments like The Brief. In today’s release of Version 3.2 for our Flagship Apps it’s the first time we’ve had a version for Android tablets.”

The Android version makes content easier to read, adds smoother swiping and streaming of TV and radio on mobile and wifi connections.

Clark said: “It’s been a big year for smartphones and tablets and in addition to the proliferation of devices across all age groups we are also seeing an increased frequency of use of our apps, in the past three months alone monthly visits are up over 30% compared to last year. It’s Australian’s obsession with keeping up to date with news and current affairs via their smartphones and tablets that is the primary driver.”

The ABC's mobile properties provide a potential channel for commercialisation of its content and it is looking to spread its services beyond TV and radio. Likewise, yesterday's launch of the ABC Fact Check app aims to track progress against the long list of promises Tony Abbott and his Government made in its campaign for office.
