Branding outfit Guts Creative, have hit the ground running with their first project, a collaboration with fellow Newcastle local Daniel Johns.

New branding outfit Guts Creative have come together with fellow Newcastle local Daniel Johns to launch one of the buzzing seaside city's largest ever creative collaborations as part of the International Animation Festival.

In Guts' first ever project, a mega-team of 37 Novocastrian animators were selected and each given five seconds of footage to animate. Almost 2500 frames were braided together to create Daniel Johns’ official video for ‘Going on 16’ from his debut solo album ‘TALK’ released in May.

"I've always enjoyed stuff that's a bit trippy and surreal and there's plenty of that happening in these animations; they're the perfect visual accompaniment for a song like this,” says Johns.

The clip premiered on July 31 as part of opening night of the festival.

It was while working on the festival with the University of Newcastle that Guts' Kelly Boulton and Kara Sullivan had the idea for the project as a way to show off the hotbed of local talent.

Working with a University of Newcastle crew, Boulton shot and directed Daniel performing the track.

"Daniel was really open to the idea of a local collaboration and was so keen to see how animators would bring his track to life." says Boulton, who, with the help of renowned animator Jane Shadbolt, curated and mentored the animators throughout the project.

This [project] has been so rewarding.” enthuses Sullivan, “We’ve been blown away. Not just by the phenomenal talent, some of whom are just starting out, but by what can be achieved through creative collaboration. They took the track to a place we could never have dreamed of.”

For her next project, Boulton is writing and directing a segment for season 46 of Sesame Street, a follow up from her debut on the show last year.
