For the most part, M&C Saatchi has been performing well over the past year, churning out work for blue-chip brands like Commonwealth Bank, bringing on the impressive James Leggett as chief and launching a new mobile division.
But there’s a flip side: a couple of key clients have walked, including Dick Smith Electronics and Eftpos, while the agency is currently defending one of its premier accounts, David Jones. The results of the David Jones pitch will be a telling indication of M&C Saatchi’s trajectory – no word yet on who the winner will be.
It’s been up and down lately. It has seen huge pieces of business like Qantas and Woolworths shift to other agencies but has also brought on major new clients including Commonwealth Bank.
Despite a couple of setbacks, the last year has been successful with the company claiming to have lifted profits 81.2% year-on-year. The result marks the agency’s strongest increase ever, clearly thanks to CommBank.
Industry stalwarts Tom Dery and Tom McFarlane, along with the recently hired James Leggett, have plenty to work on for the coming year but its diversification into broader marketing services will provide opportunities.
