Seven's decision to promote its new US drama Revenge around the clock for the past few months has paid off, with the show premiering last night to an audience of two million people.
Revenge debuted to an audience of 2.05 million metropolitan viewers, according to preliminary overnight figures from OzTam. The network has been investing heavily in the program, promoting it in the lead-up to last night with station spots, out-of-home and cinema advertising.
Seven ruled the roost last night with the US primetime soap opera's nearest contender, My Kitchen Rules, in second place, with 1.66 million viewers. Seven News, Today Tonight and Home & Away were in the top 10 highest rated shows.
For Nine, two episodes of US comedy Big Bang Theory were the third and fifth most watched for the night with 1.48 million and 1.33 million viewers. The premiere of new J.J. Abrams mystery Alcatraz saw 1.12 million viewers tune in, with a 1.03 million people staying on for the second episode.
In contrast, Ten struggled in the 8:30pm time slot against the two big premieres on its rival channels, with NCIS: Los Angeles drawing in 364,000 viewers. Ten's highest rating program yesterday was The Biggest Loser in 16th place with 776,000 viewers.
Across the main channels, Seven won the night with a 28.4% audience share, followed by Nine with 23.8%. The ABC took third place with its Monday night current affairs line-up with 13%, while Ten slipped to 10.6%. SBS had 2.7%.
