Three of the biggest names in advertising had a weekend of contrasting fortunes at the races. Gerry Harvey, whose firm is one of the biggest advertisers in Australia, had a good one. The other two, John Singleton and the Waterhouse family, fell out spectacularly.

At issue was Singo’s claim that bookmaker Tom Waterhouse had told some of his friends that his horse, More Joyous, could not win at Randwick on Saturday. The former ad man's suggestion was that information had been relayed to Waterhouse by his mother, Gai, who trained the horse.

The horse, a six year old mare that has won on 21 of her 31 outings, had been second favourite to win the race but went backwards, finishing second last.

Waterhouse has vigorously denied the claim and threatened legal action. Singo has withdrawn his horses from the Waterhouse stable.

Harvey’s horse won the race.
