Car buying intent on the increase

SYDNEY: The number of Australians intending to buy a new car in the next 12 months rose for the second consecutive month in September, with women leading the charge.

According to the Roy Morgan Automotive Leading Indicators for September 2009, an estimated 592,000 Australians intend to buy a new car within the next year (excluding Fleet, Government and Rental Buyers), up on the August 2009 figure of 565,000.

“September gains in short term new car buying intention were largely driven by increased intention of Compact SUV Vehicles, with Nissan and Honda among the few brands to gain,” said Roy Morgan Research industry communications director, Norman Morris.

“It is also interesting and important to note women out-numbered men in terms of short term new car buying intention in September, so brands in touch with the female consumer are well positioned to convert female intention into sales volume.”

Although short-term intentions have risen, the number of Australians intending to buy a new car in the next four years is down to 1,964,000, a significant drop from last month’s strong result of 2,207,000.

“These findings come one month after the strong August increase, which saw longer term new car buying intention reach the highest level since July 2008,” said Morris. “So the decline seen in September long term new car buying intention should be viewed in context to these earlier gains.”
