Epic exhibition kicks off celebrating 200 years of advertising

From the days of the original aeroplane jelly jingle to the catchy Mr Sheen tune, advertising has played a big role in the everyday lives on Australians from the 1790s to the 1990s – and now you can see the whole historic collection at the National Library of Australia.

Kicking off today in Canberra, The Sell exhibition, explores the ads of the past and traces how advertising has helped shape Aussie culture.

The ads, spruiking everything from corsets and cigarettes to political movements, depict how society and technology has evolved. Many of the spots on show would seem incredibly politically incorrect in today’s world.
